Nearly 30% of all Americans who have been outside the United States, have been there without a passport while serving in the military.

You don't need a passport to go to Iraq in a uniform.

Only 15% of Americans have a passport, but 10% of Americans have served in the military.

Also, the majority of new military recruits have never been outside their own state, some have never left their home town before.

I asked my niece (who studied French through French 5 in High School with Honors Placement) to translate a simple sentence in French. She hadn't a clue, not knowing the most common words like même. Now at the University of Hawaii she is studying Japanese this quarter, no doubt to the same ineffective result.

I don't understand how this is possible. In spite of having grown up here, I find America to be one of the most odd nations I have ever visited.

America is far from the strangest, because even Fiji is far more perverse than America - and the East before the fall of the Berlin wall was almost like science fiction. But Americans are far more odd than they suspect.
