Dan, Good stuff. I'd also ad that we consumers have a certain built-in expectation about how things are supposed to work, which is why we like having multiple toys. Microwaves never will replace conventional ovens (now we need to add toaster ovens, convection ovens, etc., all to accomplish essentially the same thing). I have more than just one kind of power saw; Ain't marketing grand!?
Humans expect entertainment, plays, movies, etc., to depict events serially over time - the program starts (gets interrupted by advertising) then has a conclusion within some planned time frame. How many of us have favorite TV programs or regular concert events that we tend to schedule things around?
The 'net has no defining schedule - there are no programming gods playing around with what appears when - the candy store is open all the time.
I agree, I can't see consumers using one in place of the other. I do see links, however, particularly with more utilitarian functions like having the computer take over the chores of a multimedia remote (god, I have four of the %*&^ things sitting there on the table.)
