My computer monitor blew up the other day--it crackled, sizzled, and popped. Framed in a halo of smoke it then went black.

I live in a very small town so drove my truck down to the little--I mean _little_--computer store. My buddy Kuljeet, one of the owners, greeted me with his usual warm smile. But before I told him about my little tragedy, I noticed a rack of computer equipment, Cisco stuff. Two Cisco 7000 routers and several other smaller Cisco units stacked on top. "Isn't this a little unusual?" I asked. "You guys surely don't need this stuff to run your podunk web site." He smiled like a guy showing off a brand new pick-up truck, "Oh gosh no, this Cisco stuff is the sort of equipment they use at the national banks or the big telcos." He got it cheap, a few thousand dollars each for the 7000s--they originally sold for a half-million per unit, he said. He loves a challenge and when the equipment started selling so cheap, he decided to learn to become a Cisco hardware/software systems engineer for pure fun and challenge.

There is a lot of equipment out there folks if my little town's computer store owner is getting them for toys.

I just noticed this article related to my real-life experience:
