Christine--you are correct about the large scale rape of farmland, of course not only in America. Short term profits make agribusiness careless about the long term effects on the land. Massive loss of precious topsoil, ecological damage from pesticides and weed killers as well as the creation of pesticide resistant insects. Chemical buildup in the soil is also a serious problem in many parts of the world.
Even worse is the incredible loss of genetic diversity through large scale monoculture of hybrids.
