Had to look that one up, Les. As ever, the Old Testament rules, and the word of Christ in the New Testament doesn't seem to enter into it. Turns out there's quite a collection of verses on the subject, the popular one is a pretty loose paraphrase.

Psa 125:3 For the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous; lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity.

Hey, you guys are home free! Clinton can't touch you! What's everbody so worried about?

Pro 10:13 In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

Oops, I'm in deep doodoo. Anyway, on to the kids.

Pro 13:24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

Pro 14:3 In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.

Blasphemously, I might guess this has something to do with Lewinsky, but that would be truly tasteless. Against better judgement, I'll leave the comment in for SNL fan Bill Vaughn.

Pro 22:8 He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.

Well, I'm more amused than angered by this so-called "sanity" forum these days.

Pro 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Pro 23:13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

I think that in a world rife with child abuse, the inerrant truth of that one needs some elaboration.

Pro 23:14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

Pro 26:3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back.

Ouch.

Pro 29:15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

I've gotten plenty of reproofs here, but sadly they haven't seem to have given me much wisdom. I'm still confused by this "hate liberalism, love the liberal" thing or whatever. As Forest Gump might say, hatred is as hatred does.
