John, if there's one thing I've learned as an observer in this "process", is that the best thing to do when unjustly accused of something you didn't do by a high-profile source (i.e. law enforcement, the media, lawyers) is to fight back relentlessly. In other words, this whole notion that the truth will out on its own is a crock of you know what. I'm not saying that justice won't ultimately prevail; I'm saying if you wait that long you might as well kiss your life goodbye in the process.

As much as we like to say we are a nation of people founded on the notion that people are innocent until proven guilty, in reality, for whatever reason, we tend to assume the opposite... unless given sufficient reason to think otherwise. Unfortunately, it seems the days when "newspaper reporter" was synonymous with "investigative journalist" are long gone. It's not about getting the real story, but about being first to publish any tidbit that comes your way and posture it as a "scoop". Quite sad.
