1) Most businesses are networked and NCs will not impact worker productivity while decreasing maintenance costs and increasing control of hardware and software assets. As for the home use, it's obvious that you aren't aware of the latest push to have software updated periodically via the web. Ther is nothing about a Network Computer which precludes local storage/control of your software if that's what you desire; it's not an either/or situation.

2) As far as ooutperforming regular compiled languages, the average 4GL is 10 to 20 times slower than Java and Microsoft's component technology. ActiveX/COM (Microsoft's component technology) are incredibly slow. Purely interpreted Java is slower than natively compiled code, but it's also portable. In any event, it only has to be interpreted once since it can be stored locally in native format unless and until the source code changes. By the way, who told you that Java can't be compiled if that extra speed is really that critical? Are you aware that garbage collection has more to do with performance than translating opcodes? You are clearly as misinformed about Java performance issues as Microsoft had hoped.

3) Let Java be Java? You don't know what it is, how it fits in or what it's potential is so I would just keep patently ridiculous statements like that to yourself.

Java is a portable operating environment with myriad services which are growing in leaps and bounds every day. It is also a programming language. but Microsoft is hoping that the development community is naive enough to believe that's all it is. The reason is clear: in just two years it has surpassed what Windows has taken 15 years to achieve. What's hasn't been matched is the number and quality of applications which in turn drives the number of installations.
