Go look up Vilfredo Pareto and his work on income distributions. Pareto finds something resembling a bell curve irregardless of the particular society involved. The problem becomes one of raising the base income level, because the total societal income will always distribute itself along the same curve. Technological advances, coupled with banking and enforcable legal contracts, are largely the engines that raised the West's standard of living above the rest of the world. And we shouldn't forget the political genius of freedom that coalesced in America 200 years ago.
