To All & Steve: Maybe CEO Schmidt starts next Monday April 14.....

From the article dated April 8, 1997 "...In addition to Compaq executives, speakers at the conference will include Intel CEO Andrew Grove, Microsoft CEO Bill Gates and Novell President Joe Marengi..."

I did not realize that "President" Joe Marengi held that title?

Compaq To Advance Web Strategy (04/08/97; 9:00 a.m. EST)
By Bob Francis, Information Week

HOUSTON -- At its Innovate trade show here this week, PC-maker Compaq Computer will make a major commitment to the Internet by announcing technology partnerships and products to provide its customers with complete Web-centric computing.

At the event, which is aimed at the company's business partners, resellers and largest customers, Compaq said it plans to announce partnerships with large Internet service providers, new Internet-usage billing technologies and Web-based management software for its servers.

Compaq already has investments in several Internet companies such as firewall supplier Raptor Systems in Waltham, Mass., and sources said the company plans to announce more investments at the show.

"No one in the PC server market has really taken the Internet ball and run with it, so there's plenty of opportunity for someone like Compaq," said Ted Julian, an analyst with International Data Corp., a research company in Framingham, Mass.

Compaq will also beef up its servers and introduce a new line of notebooks. It's planning a demonstration of Microsoft's Wolfpack Windows NT clustering software running on its ProLiant servers. Compaq announced support for Win NT clustering at the last Innovate forum in 1995. Also on the agenda: new Armada portables, including a high-end system powered by a 166-MHz Pentium MMX processor. It includes a 13.3-inch display, a 2.1-gigabyte hard disk and a CD-ROM drive. The notebooks will replace Compaq's LTE 5000 line.

Compaq will also tout an expansion of its program for reducing customer risk when moving from proprietary platforms to Intel-based systems, such as Compaq servers, said Bob Fernandez, Compaq VP of enterprise marketing. The company recently formed its own financial organization to assist customers in this transition.

The Houston company will also outline its recent shifts in distribution strategies, including build-to-order and configure-to-order programs designed to get products to market faster and at less cost. In addition to Compaq executives, speakers at the conference will include Intel CEO Andrew Grove, Microsoft CEO Bill Gates and Novell President Joe Marengi.

I would like to see CEO Schmidt discuss their (Novell) plans with Grove and Gates. Maybe at the same time CEO Schmidt could also sign a killer deal with Compaq (say license the SuiteSpot product to Compaq bundeled with all the extras at no charge) including InternetWare and the Netscape & Groupwise products. CEO Schmidt should explain the benefits of scaling the product with multiple Pentium Pro's (Grove would nod his head) and then give a 'wink'-'wink' to Gates and work the crowd, kiss babies etc....

I bet the news media would cover this!
