Wasn't McDonalds founded by the McDonald Brothers in Southern California? They had a burger joint in San Berdoo. The brothers sold the right to franchise it to Kroc. He started the franchise. BTW, the franchise fee they allowed him to charge was so low that Kroc couldn't make money. So the genius thing that happened is Kroc put up the restaurants and make his money on the rental of the them. All of the sites you see are owned by the chain.
