But you can say that about near any contractual obligation. Should we not allow 18 year olds to enter into contracts? We assume people are responsible for themselves at 18, Haq. There's a limit to how much the government should hold people's hands.
Kids aren't dumb, they know all about interest. What they don't know is, IMO, the value of the dollar - how much labor is required to pay off $X. So they overestimate their ability to handle the debt. That is true of many people of all ages, not just 18-22 year olds.
I'm not unsympathetic. I burned myself pretty good. I worked my ass off for the better part of 5 years, paid it off, and learned my lesson. ::shrug:: That's life.
