I absolutely, positively do not agree with the notion that the student who is not somehow ideologically or personally or academically in tune with the professor will be treated the same as others.

This entire post is off to the side of my argument. My only point, which gave you the springboard, is that grading should not be about ideology. Just how often it occurs is a different question.

In the Columbia case, the panel concluded that the students who complained about the classes were not penalized via their grades.

As for the issue of whether faculty members misgrade papers, hey, be my guest. As a student I was constantly surprised--both ways. On occasions I received better grades than I thought I deserved and worse grades. The way that world turns.
