Bush and the deficit:

I find it interesting to see the "common wisdom" of the left that Bush has driven us to financial ruin. Clearly to the extent it has happened is a shared effort. To look at the current budget without the context of the impact of 9/11 and the burst of the internet bubble is simple dishonest analysis.

I have developed an analogy of the US economy in the concept of a plow horse. The economy and the plow horse are powerful animals. For the country to avoid an economic and social disaster it is crucial that the economy grow and provide opportunities to an ever expanding citizenry - especially the unskilled imigrants that seem to free to come at will.

Now - the health of the horse is critical. Things that affect the horse's health include the regulatory environment, the world economic environment, the stability of our legal system and a host of other things. To the extent we burden the horse with dead weight of poor policies - after 9/11 it was crucial to remove enough weight from the horse to get it going again. Bush did this with tax cuts and deficit spending. Now the horse is moving - if we increase the burden of taxes to provide the revenues we need - we must reduce other burdens. I see the left wanting more and more burdens - burdens that make tax policy the only tool Bush has to keep the horse going.

If we increase the burden of taxes - what burdens can we remove.
