If you add the NTSC/PAL encoder to the ESS chip count they end up being pretty close to the same. Within a few dollars and not the $10 delta that has been reported.

ESS needs it's companion and a PAL encoder 3 chips minimum?
Cube needs added circuitry to match the Audio effects in the ESS chips.

The point I've been trying to make is that there is added cost to both solutions beyond the initial single VCD decoder chips.
And that cost varies depending on feature set requirements.

Also the argument about Cubes chip being necessarly expensive because it includes a NTSC/PAL encoder, appears bogus.
As Steve said the yield and test costs are minor concerns...
