Saez does matter

Berkeley’s Emmanuel Saez has won the Clark Medal — the prize given by the American Economic Association to an economist under 40. In the past it has been given only once every two years, making it scarcer than the Nobel (although it will be annual from now on), and it’s a very big deal. Past recipients here.

Saez’s home page is here. He’s made his mark with painstaking use of tax records and other information to reconstruct the long-term history of income distribution, effective tax rates, and more. It’s incredibly influential work — it plays a big role in my own understanding of where we are and how we got here — and it’s great to see that work honored.

Congratulations, Emmanuel!
