Freddy, I am not immune to the charms of the old south, having experienced your gentle and gentlemanly ways. There is much about the region that appeals to me, including the food and the slower pace of life. However, it seems to me that the basis of the Civil War was the right to own slaves. It would seem then, that a Confederate-American would have strong feelings on this issue. To me, slavery is indefensible, although I know it has occurred in many times and cultures.

I read an essay this morning by a black intellectual, who was expressing his feelings that much of the bad racial feelings we have now in this country started after the Civil War, when the government did not provide the promised forty acres and a mule to freed slaves, to placate the feelings of the defeated Southern landowners. It does seem to me that there are so many bad feelings now that some healing process should have happened, and that would have been a way to start it, and maybe we wouldn't have so many angry blacks in ghettos now.

What do you think about all that?
