Sudan: Religion Is Simply An Excuse For War
The Nation (Kenya), September 30
By Farah Maalim
...
There are no religious conflicts in the Sudan. The impression created is that of a conflict between the Muslim Arab north and the Christian African south. There are no Arabs of any sizeable proportion in the north of Sudan.

What they have are African Muslims of various tribes who use Arabic as their lingua franca.

The Reverend Jesse Jackson looks more Arab than Hassan AI-Turabi of the Sudan. The northerners of the Sudan are as much Arab as African Americans can be called Englishmen.

The African dialects in northern Sudan are Dungala, Halfawi, Shaigia, Hamar, and so on. Not all northern Sudanese are Muslims, and Christians are only a minority in southern Sudan.

That is not to suggest that there is no conflict in the Sudan. The conflict needs to be addressed urgently. The diversity of the country should be reflected in its constitution, statutes and government. The dialogue should be conducted internally under the auspices of regional and continental bodies.

The conduct and results of the Somali talks in Djibouti confirm unequivocally that only Africans are able to resolve African conflicts sincerely. If the West stops interfering in the Sudan, the Sudanese people should be able to sit together and solve their conflicts amicably.

What we witness today in the Great Lakes region and Angola are nothing but efforts by the developed world to assume control of the biggest reserves of natural resources on the African continent.
