I expect the German government to begin focusing shortly after the elections, but I
agree, heretofore there has been nothing. Last week, the International Information
Industry Congress, an organization consisting of various national IT associations and
companies, wrapped up its semi-annual conference in Berlin. Among other things, the
organization issued a short paper on the Y2K problem, but at the closing press
briefing, not a single question was asked about it. The German IT industry
(VDMA/ZVEI FVIT) is working the issue, but unfortunately European corporate
culture is rather timid when it comes to confronting government agencies, etc., so it
may mean that we and the Brits will have to step in. Of course, the Dutch political
leadership has pounded on Kohl et al. a few times, but clearly it will take more than
that.
