Re: ILIF -In trying to organize my own thinking about whether I should IOI or confirm allocations I've created the following check list. Here are the characteristics which determine whether an IPO has potential for a first day pop and/or potential for longer term premium (over its initial IPO price). I invite you to comment on or add to it the items in this list:

1. Lead underwriter has a track record for strong after-market performance (e.g., Goldman Sachs)
2. Company is a pure internet play (a real dot.com company)
3. Company has little or no competition
4. Brand name, product, or service is well-known and used by many net surfers
5. Product or service is in a rapidly growing market niche (e.g., dsl in 1999)
5. Management is famous for successes in other tech/inet ventures
6. Management has "star" appeal (e.g. "TSCM's Cramer)

Without these factors in place it would be better to avoid the IPO or try to buy it in the aftermarket (at prices below the IPO)
