Bill, are you serious? The real point is fraud detection. Big business.

Discovery of fraudulent back pain is the job of insurance company
medics and the like. They would seek to disprove goldbricks.
If there is evidence of pain agents in spinal fluid, they lose.
If they prove no pain exists, the claimant loses. Am I dreaming?

Now back to BSE.
The test that I heard of from C.I.Tech. would use an antigen, I believe.
My understanding is that an animal or person sensitized to the disease
(whichever one is being tested for) produces antibodies which can be
extracted as blood plasma. Into such plasma you would introduce the
suspect tissue sample. If there is a reaction, a precipitate forms
almost immediately. Should be done within minutes.
I am thinking of rabies testing, where they refer to "titre", and
measure the level of antibody activity very accurately. (It must be
very difficult to actually find a 'rhab' virus. As well as expensive to
prepare X ray micrographs.)

Excuse my ignorance of some of these tests. I will have to go back to
the books as soon as I make a few more trades.

Speaking of which, IZP (VSE) is geared to such tests.
