Canadians were willing (or forced) to learn French ROTF... ss nothing as changed really in my 50 years on this planet.. you simply do not need French to survive. and live in Canada. sure it helps in Quebec... but what do you surmise the JoeTimbit from my other post should do ? The only people he sees in his life that do not speak French are tourists. Not much incentive. Only new immigrants are 'forced' to learn French. In fact many of those go to international schools, where they learn the required French, the desired English and their native language.. poor buggers... oh to be a gloriously unilingual Canadian !!

I agree on the Mandarin and Spanish though and that has been my plane for my kids.. They bother take Mandarin and are in French immersion mainly because they can easily handle it, I can help then and learning Spanish from what I understand and have seen is quite easy when you know both French and English. My sister in California picked it (Spanish) up in six months, she speaks the best French in my branch of the family.

self-sufficient regions. how many of those are there exactly ? :o) Albert would like it now... but then ? When the farmers were crying, oil was cheap and oilsands were a peculiarity..

Canada was formed the way it was so that it would not be swallowed up by the US. That was the single most overriding concern of the founding fathers. Point final. Everything else was done to accommodate that. We are slowly being culturally conquered (IMO) though and ironically Quebec is one of the best weapons against that. Considering the political bent in Alberta .. how long would they resist ...
