Steve,

Fidelity does a certain amount of trading with brokers to keep communications lines opens for research, gain access to analysts, receive allocation of IPOs, etc. Some larger trades or those involving less liquid stocks may require the services of one of the larger brokers, but Fidelity is probably pretty self-capable. Some firms do the majority of their trading in-house and cut checks to the brokers as compensation for research and other services.
