"May you live in interesting times."

If you are a college football fan that quote is perfect for these days. There have been some amazing changes the last couple of years and I see many more over the next two also. I agree it's better for the players...for the sport...not so much.

The NCAA doesn't allow schools to pay players under the NIL rules. So for now all the schools get to keep the TV money. Where does the NIL money come from? Business and individuals. That means the schools with the richest and deepest fan base have more money to spread around. That turns into pay-to-play. That's not suppose to be legal under the NCAA rules. Donors don't care and rules aren't being enforced. This gives money rich schools a huge advantage. Think So Cal, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Ohio State, Michigan, and so on.

That's great for those schools and players. But for the over 100 other schools they have little chance of success. They now have to try and get regular fans to give to their collective so the collective can pay players. In other words not do we only expect fans to come to the games and buy merch, we want them to pay the players. And what kind of return can they expect? Well if a players turns out to be a star they get to watch as he transfers to a higher paying school. At that point most fans are going to think, why bother? Again, great for the player, sucks for the fans. But wait, we are going to level things out by sending you one of our third string players we made a mistake on so he can get playing time at your little school. See it's really fair after all. LoL.

If things keep going as they are I could see a steady decline in interest in this game. So I think there will be an attempt to put in some rules. One would be to bring back the sit out a year rule. I'm sure it will be tested in court. You can't limit what someone makes. However there is not a right to play football or any other sport. Maybe they go to having players sign contracts. Maybe they start allowing schools to pay players out of the TV money. No matter what they end up doing, I think they at least try something.
