There doesn't seem to be anything to qualify him to jump all the way to CEO from CFO. Or did I miss something?

I think we're reading too much into his comment that he doesn't want to be just a bean counter. Bean counting, to me, means being confined to calculators and spreadsheets.

In context, he's talking about wanting to be involved in strategic aspects of the business, because strategy is crucial for tech companies. That doesn't necessarily mean becoming CEO, however. It could simply mean being a more strategically oriented CFO.
