Well said metacomet. It is just a matter of coincidence that I happened to know that subject cold because I was so involved in the fight for the Permanent fund. The fight of course, was with the oil companies (who were demogoging the issue) and another party who wanted to spend all the money-lol. The fight was led by an old bush rat, very tough and smart (lived in a remote village near Dillingham, Naknek I think?) liberal republican poet governor along the lines of Abraham Lincoln. Jay Hammond. A true Alaskan hero! His army was a bunch of rare, very young and very liberal, ad hoc democratics, who managed to gain control of the legislature for a few years in the 70's. We are basically a very conservative state. It was really a rough and tumble fight. Today Alaska has over 40 billion in our treasury and only about 650,000 people; and the Permanent fund continues to grow at an astounding rate. Alaska will probably never need to have an income tax. Which state or country can say that-lol?
