Trump Has So Much Free Time That He Randomly Calls Lawmakers To Discuss TV

Much of President Trump’s unstructured ‘executive time’ is reportedly spent calling lawmakers to discuss random topics.
According to the Washington Post, Trump uses his ample free time to randomly call lawmakers to discuss TV. Senator James M. Inhofe (R) received a call from Trump as he was chopping wood at his home in Oklahoma. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) stepped off of a plane to learn that Trump was “available for the rest of the evening” to talk to him.
Trump allegedly calls lawmakers at any hour of the day, often with no real agenda. Congressional Republicans have begun to reciprocate, dialing the president directly.
“I never called President Bush or President Obama,” said Barrasso. “I just feel comfort in calling President Trump. He calls me regularly to talk about issues. He’s always helpful for both of us.”
Trump uses his “executive time” to call the lawmakers.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said one GOP senator who occasionally calls Trump.
“It’s a different world,” said Sen. John Thune (S.D.)
Trump will often call senators if he sees news about their states. Sometimes he calls just to chat about what he saw on television, or golf.
Sometimes, Republican senators have called Trump to offer him praise. Inhofe, for example, recalls the adoration for the president he heard from voters while touring rural towns in his state.
“So I said, ‘Mr. President, if .?.?. there are days when you’re depressed because you think everybody hates you, I had this experience today,’ ” Inhofe said, recalling a conversation he had with Trump about a month ago. “Not one person was out there who didn’t say, I love you.”
Prior presidents have preferred scheduled calls with agendas, rather than Trump’s unscheduled chats. |
