NTT DoCoMo Wins 3G Cellphone Operating License For Japan
nni.nikkei.co.jp
Oh, what a surprise. NTT get their license first. :-}
Friday, June 30, 2000

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Japan's NTT
DoCoMo Inc. (9437) said Friday that it
has received approval from Japan's
Ministry of Posts and
Telecommunications to launch
third-generation (3G) cellphone
services in Japan.

Japan's dominant cellphone company
said that it aims to begin providing 3G
cellphone services in the Tokyo
metropolitan area and the cities of
Yokohama and Kawasaki at the end of
May 2001.

If it meets this schedule, NTT
DoCoMo is likely to be the first
company in the world to roll out
commercial cellphone services using
3G technology.

Eight NTT DoCoMo affiliate
companies which operate its cellphone
services in other regions of Japan will
launch services later in 2001 or around
April 2002, the company said. NTT
DoCoMo Tokai and NTT DoCoMo
Kansai are expected to begin 3G
services in December 2001, with the
remaining six regional affiliates starting
in April 2002.

The company said that it will adopt the
wideband code division multiple access
(W-CDMA) technology for 3G
cellphone services.

Japan's Ministry of Posts is expected to
grant three operating licenses for 3G
cellular services. Japan Telecom Co.
(9434) and DDI Corp. (9433) are likely
to win the other two licenses, industry
observers have said.

Unlike many other countries, Japan
doesn't auction 3G licenses, but
instead judges applicants on the basis
of technical requirements and
operational experience.

So how long will DDI have to wait for its license?
