Maybe this will be more clear:...why wouldn't that be enough background/experience to have the entire population invest...

I thought I answered that question. I don't think it's a question of not enough background, or "trust" as you put it earlier.

Why are so many Democrats so violently opposed to privatization

Because privatization is not in Dem genetic makeup. Government transfer programs are.

when their own leaders... have said that SS is a mess and needs to be fixed.

Because the privatization part of Bush's proposal doesn't "fix" the problem, which is a shortfall of money to meet obligations. The only way to fix that is through benefit cuts or tax increases. The privatization part doesn't fix that. It actually makes it worse. The part of Bush's proposal that fixes it is what he danced around on Thursday night, the reduction in benefits by changing from a wage-based formula to a price-based formula. Privatization is extraneous to the fix.

Why is AARP opposed

I haven't looked at that carefully enough to offer an opinion. I don't like their politics, am not a member, and don't really want to know more about then than I already do.

Meaning they want to control these people...

I don't think you appreciate how many people there are out there who want a guaranteed return that they don't have to think about. Not everyone is as adventurous as you or I. Lots of people are just busy or lazy. Or insecure outside their comfort zones. They like the comfort of the status quo, even if it means less money for their retirement. And there are politicians who are listening to them. Not everyone who opposes Bush's proposals is a dirty-dealing Bush-hating Democrat. Sometimes they have legitimate reasons.

The additional couple of percentage points that the Feds added in 1983 were supposed to permanently "fix" the problem.
And it almost would have had the "trust fund" not been spent.

.or do these groups simply want Social Security to fail completely?

I think you've got that backwards. I support Bush's proposal because I want to get rid of SS. It's clear to me that that is the objective of many of the proponents. I wouldn't support private accounts otherwise. We already have IRAs and 401Ks if people want to use retirement-specific accounts. Or they can just save the old fashioned way. The only sound justification for Bush's private accounts is to suck money out of the current SS and make is smaller, preferably extinct over time.
