Interesting. I googled around a little and found an income statement for the Salvation Army on the web but couldn't find one for the Heritage Foundation. Both are private organizations but the Salvation Army receives charitable contributions and the HF doesn't. Apparently there are laws regarding financial transparency for charities. Off the top of my head, I tend to agree with you that there's no good reason why a church organization should be exempt from this type of disclosure. As for losing their tax exempt status, the problem, of course, is that this would diminish the amount of charitable services each church could provide in its community. Right now both Rs and Ds are on record as looking for ways to get more money into churches for their relief programs not less.
