Brazil's Congress to resume austerity votes Wed

Reuters, Tuesday, January 05, 1999 at 17:54

BRASILIA, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Brazil's Congress was set to
resume voting on the government's anti-crisis austerity package
Wednesday when a proposed hike in the financial transactions
tax faced an important vote in the Senate, a leading lawmaker
said Tuesday.
Sen. Romeu Tuma said he expected the government would
muster the three-fifths majority it needs to approve the
controversial increase in the so-called CMPF tax in a first of
two full votes on the floor of the upper house.
