I don't think it is possible to quantify whether independent thinking was less prevalent in that generation. To consider this you must put the subject into the context of the times. This generation grew up in poverty during the depression and then were sent to war in their early years. They matured during the height of the cold war and drove this country to prosperity through these times.

Through my own experience, I believe that no matter how well personal and domestic economies improved, an underlying concern of returning to poverty was always a deep concern for this generation. Its hard to forget being 8 years old and stealing coal from trains just to get your family through the winter.

I prefer to view this generation as great. And thank them for carrying the torch through these times so my generation can now concentrate on independent thought. We have a fine view because we stand on their weary shoulders.
