It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, but I liked Breaking Away too. It contained one of my favorite funny lines of all times: “Refund?”

(My favorite funny line was in Young Frankenstein when Gene Hackman as the blind man yells out to the monster as he goes running from his house after having soup spilled on his lap . . . “Wait, wait, I was going to make you some espresso.”)

The number of films about the suburbs are countless and not all have been negative but generally it does get a bad rap. I don’t think it was the burbs in particular that were the object of criticism in Revolutionary Road, and some other films as well, so much as it is the rise of corporate culture and the jobs the men needed to fill in order to support their families in the suburbs. It’s the Man in the Grey Flannel Suit more than the rows of ticky-tacky houses on the hillside that comes under fire. Usually the houses are pretty nice. Also, most criticisms of the suburbs in the films are sympathetic with the plight of the women – while the men are having glamorous martini lunches with their hot secretaries in the city, it's the wives who are stuck with the kids and the laundry out there on the corner of emptiness and hopelessness.

Also, until very recently, the burbs were portrayed as heaven on TV. Laura Petrie loved her home.
