Columns are by nature restrictive. Good policy would be a different topic, and it would be interesting to hear his take on that, but I don't think Williams was intentionally avoiding it, so much as dealing with the concept of "rights" in an allotted number of lines. I have always thought Williams was a clean thinker and like his writing.

For a long time, I have wondered at the loose use of this term. I don't believe we have the right to this universal safety net so many claim. It needs to be clarified that as a nation we choose to help those in need, not that we are forced to provide it. Rights implies an entitlement and my old social service days left me with a strong aversion to this mentality. It's destructive and defeating. imo.
