thanks for the reply, pw... i may try powerquest's secondchance2.0. in addition to drive image and partition magic. i'm also considering installing zonealarm, which would mean introducing it into a mix that already includes blackice defender and norton personal firewall. i'm kinda hunting around for any tales of compatibility issues involving those three programs coexisting on the same os. :) mark
