I bet it isn't MSFT that comes up with the operating system for cars. My guess is that it is one of the RTOS vendors such as INTS, WIND or QNX (or someone you have never heard of yet). Just as MSFT leveraged its beginnings in the OS development business to the gorilla it is today, some new entity will start from airbags, brakes or engine controls (the heart of the car) and go on to take over the human interface. That makes a lot more sense than going from the human interface to the engine controls.

As a start, I would look at who is active in OSEK if you want to see the future of computing in cars.
