I just sent this blog post as an email to Bob Herbert

Found My Story, and I'm Stickin' With It

We all know about the journalist's line, "a story too good to check."

Apparently Times' columnist Bob Herbert found that story when he found a soldier willing to tell him about all sorts of abuses of Iraqis by American military personnel.

The problem is that those stories made no sense, something he might have discovered if he'd bothered to look for any eyewitnesses to the events described.

I realize he's a columnist and not a straight reporter, but isn't it incumbant on him to ask the military for comment before simply publishing the word of a single soldier, simply because what that soldier has to say suits his agenda?
