I'll pipe up as this is one of my fave topics for freewheeling speculation.
I don't think we need to leave the planet, in the sense that we'd be cornered into stagnation otherwise. However not doing so strikes me as an unnecessary self-restriction.
One day, if we have a cheap&easy way to go into and out of orbit, space will indeed be ours. There's simply no competition for it right now. No aliens have turned up yet. If we run into some, that will require a lot of sniffing each other's butts before settling on a mutual policy.
I think where you and I don't see eye to eye is about raping the planet. I agree it's happening now, even if we differ on matters of scale. What I do believe though is that mine is the first generation to consciously incorporate "clean" into technical evolution. I see this as a sea change. Together with our embryonic mastery of the biological canvas, this will allow us to enjoy ever-improving quality of life - while at the same time - restoring wilderness and lightening our footprint on the land. Without resorting to any regressive philosophy...
Imagine us living happily eating natural foods which come from self-contained sources separated from land&sea. That's the ultimate conservationism. Closed food cycles will become real in time, with the food being pretty snazzy.
Bottom line: I am an optimist. I think we eventually can have our cake and eat it. New technology will be the key, and it will be distinguished by its elegance: awesome, complex results with a modest material budget. In the mean time, we pay attention to cleaning up the processes we do have. Just compare a 60s car or papermill with its 90s equivalent. The trend is upon us : better, stronger, cleaner.
