hi catlady

re "I'm not clear on why you'd want to run 2 or three different firewalls. Isn't one enough?"

i'm sure we're talking personal preference here. as i said, because of the instability i encountered for a period of time with new releases from blackice, it made sense to add norton personal firewall. quite simply, having two firewalls is not unlike carrying a spare tire for your vehicle.

next, i said i was considering adding a third firewall, zonealarm. which means i'm interested in hearing what others have to say and what i can learn from reading articles on the subject (the current issue of pcworld has a very good piece on the merits of six different firewalls). and i also stated that i like zonealarm because it's ability to protect against the netscape java security hole. it is the only one of the three i mentioned that do so. the more i delve into this topic of firewalls and intrusion detection devices, the more i become aware of weaknesses in one that are strengths in the other. a quick example is that blackice will not block 'back orifice' on its default setting, but the symantec product will. another example is that norton personal firewall doesn't put all ports into stealth mode, but zonealarm and blackice will.

is one enough? in my opinion, no. all three working together can be compromised. one by itself can be compromised easier.

i haven't installed the third one yet. i'm thinking that it would be a learning experience, but i'm delaying until i have some time to devote to the juggling that i anticipate will be necessary.

hope this answers your question. your thoughts always welcomed

:)
