Have you been looking at the debate between me and Brumar on the subject of freedom of speech? I've dredged up all the US Supreme Court rulings on digital media and the relevant case law governing it. The USSC generally takes a pretty broad view of free speech and has protected political speech in particular in the public square, including in some cases, the digital public square. However, to date, they have not ruled on all the important things around social media. So it boils down to the terms and conditions and policies of the social media owners and executives. That is my unprofessional conclusion, since I'm not a lawyer. So the bottom line is that freedom of speech is what SI says it is, since the law has not caught up to the citizens' use of social media as the modern day public square. That is why Google, Facebook, and Twitter can censor conservative speech with impunity. Our US SC has not protected our speech there yet. In addition, that means they have not protected it here on SI yet either. So the bans, ignores, and all other terms, conditions, and policies here on SI stand, until case law proves otherwise.
Anyway, as to where our President decides to post, that will be up to him and where he thinks it will have the most impact without having trolls go nuts on him. I have no input and no connection to him, other than my support for him and his policies through my vote for him. If I had to guess, though, I imagine he will post on the board of the person he knows and trusts.
As to scrutiny, I think you are right. You should always engage with digital media as if EVERYONE can always see your posts, both private and public. In addition, the data here never goes away. It is stored forever and becomes a part of your permanent record...your digital exhaust. We all forget that sometimes, but there is no data privacy nowadays. I am a big believer in Data Privacy, the Right to Be Forgotten Digitally, and Anonymity in all digital media, because I believe privacy is foundational to Democracy and your digital data should be your own Intellectual Property as part of your digital persona. Once again, though, our laws have not caught up to technology. So we're all out of luck as to those things.
Heywood, I don't agree with your opinions, as you well know, but you guys really should stop with all the insults and vitriol. I get the passion, but it doesn't help with debates and it turns everyone off of even listening. I'm one of those people that will engage with anyone, because I generally just like people and like to listen to all ideas. But even I get tired of the constant barrage of invective around here. It makes me wonder if we all have gone crazy. |
