Yes, DU rounds are safe to handle, it's when they hit something that's the problem. They burn on impact, and 20 to 70% of their mass is vaporized and diffuses into the air as radioactive uranium oxide particles with a half-life of 4.5 billion years.

The DU shells for 120mm cannon weigh about 10 pounds apiece. That's a lot of cancer-causing dust we'll be scattering.
