Election forecast

Big-Ben.jpgThe UK election has been a pretty dull affair, with few people making bold predictions. Let me join those not doing so, by forecasting its outcome.

Friday May 6th will be a rather sour day, as people face a government they don't particularly want, led by someone they don't particularly trust, to take them into a future they don't particularly welcome.

There will be a bigger budget deficit as revenues fail to meet Treasury targets. This will lead to an increase in taxation, and an increase in the proportion of the economy taken and spent by government.

Increased regulation as well as taxation will make Britain less competitive internationally, and it will attract a smaller share of inward investment; and economic growth will be lower, too.

There will be further erosion of civil liberties in the name of anti-terrorist protection and better law enforcement, but achieving neither; and the state will intervene more in the detail of our lives to no good effect.

This prediction is independent of the actual result of the election. It is made regardless of who wins.

All in all, if you felt like going to sleep for a few years, this might be good time to do it, for the comforting forecast is that it might eventually get better.
