The dogs of quagmire

Republicans often criticize Democrats for characterizing the war in Iraq as “another Vietnam,” arguing that the use of such language lowers troop morale and can have the same effect that bad-mouthing the war had 30 years ago — turning a winnable war into a political and military debacle.

Such talk has cooled of late — with the notable exceptions of rhetoric from Sens. Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd. But another senator this week revealed that his mind still clings to a war of generations past when he let slip the dogs of quagmire.

Complaining about the media’s obsession on the rhetorical flourishes of DNC chairman Howard Dean, Senate Minority Whip Richard J. Durbin recited a list of things reporters should be focusing on.

“They don’t want to talk about 25,000 jobs gone from GM,” said the Illinois Democrat. “They don’t want to talk about the president’s low approval rating. They don’t want to talk about the soldiers dead in Viet… in Iraq.”

Some Democratic habits seem hard to break.
