Spokane editor explains probe of mayor's alleged misconduct

By jromenesko@poynter.org (Jim Romenesko)

Spokane Spokesman-Review
While Spokesman-Review reporters were investigating the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal in 2002, allegations surfaced that Spokane Mayor Jim West sexually molested young boys in the late 1970s when he was a Boy Scout leader and a Spokane County sheriffs deputy. Those allegations are reported in today's paper. Editor Steven A. Smith tells readers: "The Spokesman-Review understands fully the political ramifications of todays investigative report. We know well hear from readers. Some will want to criticize the mayor. Some will want to criticize us."
> READER'S COMMENT: "The one thing that stood out to me is the paper's admission that it hired an outsider to create phony online identities in order to lure the mayor into responding and engaging in inappropriate online chats. Whether or not it's justified, and the paper explains why it did this, it's sure to be debated as possible journalistic entrapment."

For a quarter century, the man who is now Spokane's mayor has used positions of public trust – as a sheriff's deputy, Boy Scout leader and powerful politician – to develop sexual relationships with boys and young men.

One man, Robert J. Galliher, claims in a court deposition that Jim West molested him in the mid-1970s when he was a boy and West was a Spokane County sheriff's deputy and Boy Scout leader."
