A Passing

Colonel David Hackworth, The Hack as he was known, is dead at age 74. Hackworth enlisted in the Army at age 15 and rose from the rank of private, by way of battlefield commission, to colonel. Not a mean achievement.

Indisputably brave, winning the Distinguished Service Cross twice, the Silver Star ten times, and the combat Bronze Star eight times in the process he was wounded in action on eight occasions.

I served under two men who were junior officers in Hackworth?s battalion of Wolfhounds, my old regiment, in Vietnam. Both regarded him as a near deity. I am not a Hackworth fan and his actions post-1971, in my mind, detract greatly from the legacy he could have left as a soldier and an officer.

Suffice it to say he was an immensely brave and immensely flawed man who left no one who knew him ambivalent and who was ambivalent about no one.
