Hi Mohan-san:

What do you know about the recent Telecom bill signed by Clinton last January? I have several phone lines, and on one phone I hardly use it for long distance. Today I got a phone bill from MCI and it shows $ 6.51 (I just switch to MCI and I don't remember why I did it). I called customer service and she told me: You have to make a minimum $ 5 L/D call or you'll be charged the minimum. Wow!! What if I am away for a month? You'll be charged regardless. I said take me off having MCI as the L/D carrier. I also have to notify the local carrier, which I did. The local carrier is going to charge me $ .53 for not having a L/D carrier. That is OK, it is cheaper than $ 6.51/month even for not using it. The only thing I have to pay the local carrier is one time $ 5.26 to remove the carrier.

One caveat: if you don't have a carrier, do not dial L/D just by dialing 1 +A/C +Phone# becuase it is anybody's guess who is going to carry that call, you can be charged $ 2.99/minute and there is nothing
you can do about it.

What if you want to call Long Distance. I use 1010... Previously I use one which I like, and now even better because there is no monthly fee, only minimum 3 minutes. Just today I get in the mail another 1010... which has no minimum and no monthly fee. Call to India is 69c a minute, 24 hours a day.

I am not going to post here which 1010... I am using because I am not promoting it. I can PM if you are interested. I just want the experience of others and to know what the new Telecom Law is all about. Things are so messy since they broke up ATT into pieces.
