So Correa is dispossessing his voting block in favour of big money? Sounds practical to me.

Ruining the environment. that is what they said about placer miners in Venezuela who were using mercury and hydraulicking the river beds etc.. I think Los Cristinas was owned by a former lover of a former president of Vz. who was later jailed. She was born in the US, a women named Lemon, and when ill in later life was given short shrift by some fast talking lawyers who divvied up her claims afterwards and created some legal hooks into them.. all of which led to people angling for them ever after.

It has never been proven that small scale hydraulicing or dredging really disturbs the ecosystem that much. But it was the large scale stuff which forced a court decision in the states in the 1920's which shutdown most placer mining in California. And decisions like this shutdown hydraulicking in BC in some valleys. Gradually hydraulicing and finally dredging became verboten all over AK and the Yukon.

You don't really need that much water if you use rockers, spirals or centrifugal concentrators like the Reicherts, Falcon or Knelson. They can be run on 25%-40% density. You can recirc your water and use sand filters and semi permeable membranes to keep back the silt. But small miners probably can't afford that. A modest sized Knelson centrifugal costs about $100K to install. A big one over $250K. Their capacity is probably a triple exaggeration to boot. And to run a decent sized placer mine you need to install about 4 in series. I figure you are better off with motorized rockers. 2500 per and they will handle 2 yards per hour with minimal water.
