I don't think that the religious right is going to stop pulling Republican strings.

The religious right hasn't been pulling Republican strings for about a decade now. It would seem that you still haven't gotten over the Reagan years, but they have. The religious right has essentially the same status with Republicans that the Teamsters have with the Democrats. That is that the parties are certainly willing to take their respective contributions, make a few speeches and promise some things. But when push comes to shove the parties always back down because they know that too many people, both Democrat and Republican, don't entirely trust them.

You'll continue to hear random noises about, for instance, prayer in school, but they will never do anything serious about it because (Dipy's assessment notwithstanding) they are not suicidal.
