Very interesting take from Grant's. Thanks for posting.

In my opinion, today's environment is not unlike the early days of television.

The content (television shows or Web sites) is subject to short-lived up-and down cycles. A show like “I Love Lucy,” or “Gunsmoke” can be very hot and closely watched or a Web site like Priceline, Amazon, can be very in favor and well-trafficked. Some never really hit their stride and are cancelled early on. But even great shows go in cycles. And sooner or later, they are cancelled (or in the case of a select few – MTM, M*A*S*H, Seinfeld -- they retire). But the underlying infrastructure – the broadcast network – continues to rise and expand and make money (at least in the early days). Hot e-commerce sites and Web destinations are subject to a “flavor-of-the-month” mentality/dynamic, but the infrastructure and diversification of CMGI makes it able to sustain itself when trends ebb and flow.

I don't disagree with their specific analysis of a priceline.com. It's true that it's absurdly overvalued. Lumping CMGI in with these one-trick wonders and “site of the month” Internet stocks is where we run into trouble.

Broadly lumping in Cisco and Pricline and CMGI and Dell and saying they're all “Internet stocks” is foolish and amateurish – which unfortunately describes the sophistication of too much of the investing community (retail and especially institutional, which largely hasn't a clue about the Internet…)

What I hope savvy investors will realize is that there's bathwater, and then there's the baby, ya know?
