GUANTANAMO BAY IS HERE TO STAY jim geraghty reporting TKS Vice President Cheney says we're not closing the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. For all those who recommend that facility be closed... what alternatives are they endorsing? Turning the prisoners over to their home countries? If we do that to the Egyptians, Jordanians, Saudis, and arguably the Pakistanis the detainees will probably get much worse treatment in their own countries. Shift them into the regular criminal justice system? I completely disagree with the argument that these guys deserve the same rights of the accused that some ordinary American street criminal does. In some cases, the U.S. may have a tough time proving they violated American laws, if American armed forces picked them up on the battlefield in Afghanistan. Besides, what happens when these guys are found not guilty by judges who won't admit classified evidence? You don't like Guantanamo Bay? Fine.
