[SR Discloses ADSL Partnership]
March 3, 1997 -- Newsbytes news service has reported that US Robotics' network division has announced it is partnering with CS Telecom, a French telecoms and networking service company, to market ADSL products to telcos and service providers worldwide.
In a press briefing held yesterday morning in Paris, Mark de Simone, vice president of Europe for US Robotics' network systems division, told Newsbytes that the partnership between the two companies includes a pan-European development and distribution agreement for integration and value-added services around Internet access products, including ADSL.
"USR's input to this deal will be to develop the customer premises equipment, and the first stage concentrators that feed to the exchange," he said, adding that CS Telecom's role will be to develop the equipment on the telecoms service provider side of the network. Conventional thinking had held that the Total Control platform would serve as the central office component of USR's offering.
According to de Simone, the alliance also includes joint development and worldwide marketing of future ATM switch and concentration systems, aimed at deploying large scale ATM "solutions."
"To date, most of the players in the ADSL market have either been smaller equipment companies, or the telcos themselves. Together with CD Telecom, we will market and supply a complete ADSL/ATM solution to the telecoms companies, making us the first offering in this section of the market," he said.
According to Yazid Sabeg, Compagnie des Signaux's chairman (CdS is CS Telecom's parent company) and chairman of CS Telecom, the agreement will position the company on the telecommunications market as pioneers in the new technologies arena. "Our companies complement each other in terms of target market and product offering. We also share the same vision of the future of information technologies," he said.
